PROJECT OVERVIEW

Estwing is my attempt at creating a level for Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. The development of this project involved me looking into popular Hotline Miami 2 levels and consequently creating MDV diagrams, beats and pacing maps and an extensive map overview to help replicate the quality of those levels into mine.

KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

POST-MORTEM

Considering the length of time I had to create a level for a game I had never previously played, I'm quite content with how it came out. Certainly from a gameplay perspective, I do believe I was successful in creating the chaotic atmosphere that Hotline Miami 2 is notorious for whilst ensuring that the level was balanced enough so that the player both wouldn't be able to easily clear all of the enemies but also find it essentially impossible to clear the level.

One place where improvements could have been made is with the visual look of the level; the floor itself is good enough in my opinion but a common theme of the most popular Hotline Miami 2 levels - whether from the creators themselves or the Steam Workshop - is the quality of the meshing out. I failed to really dip into fleshing out my level with a variety of different assets to bring it out to life more.

This could link to another area that needed improvement; planning out. The quality of both this level and its GDD would have massively benefitted from having a planned sprints for when I'll work on certain areas - something like Trello, Gantt or Miro would have been useful for this. In my defence, I did have to balance creating this level with additionally creating two other levels for different modules so it was definitely a struggle at times to simply find the time but this definitely could have been made easier by having a wider plan of how I'd work on all my modules as I do find myself being spontaneous at times.
